Clean Air Program
The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission is actively
pursuing strategies to improve air quality in northwest Indiana, including public
education through the NIRPC Clean Air Campaign. The purpose of the NIRPC Clean Air
Campaign is to encourage small modifications in daily behavior that will collectively help
to improve air quality in northwest Indiana by reducing emissions that contribute to the
creation of ground-level ozone. The campaign is managed by the NIRPC Environmental
Management Policy Committee, which also serves as the Northwest Indiana Air Quality
Steering Committee. The Air Quality Steering Committee provides guidance to the Indiana
Department of Environmental Management on how northwest Indiana can reach air quality
attainment and how the public can be informed on air quality issues.
Northwest Indiana has been selected by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and the Federal Highway Administration as one of fourteen demonstration
communities nationwide to participate in a public education program called "It
All Adds Up to Cleaner Air". The joint federal agency program provides materials
and partial funding support to conduct regional air quality public awareness campaigns.
Northwest Indiana has also been selected by USEPA and FHWA as one of six demonstration
communities to complete pre and post campaign surveys. The telephone surveys will be used
to evaluate the effectiveness of the "It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air"
campaign to increase public awareness on air quality issues.
As part of the "It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air"
campaign, NIRPC has produced an information brochure titled "It All Adds Up to
Cleaner Air for Northwest Indiana". The brochure provides a summary of the
information contained on this website. Copies of the brochure can be obtained by
contacting NIRPC at
