Title VI Training Workshop

Tuesday, August 30th 9:30a.m. – 3:00p.m. at NIRPC

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) is providing a Title VI Training Workshop for Cities, Towns & Counties, led by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Recipients of federal aid, are required to comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI) and take steps to ensure that programs do not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, age, income or disability. Subrecipients of federal aid through the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) must provide assurances that programs do not discriminate, programs are evaluated for impacts, and corrective actions taken where needed to overcome discrimination where it exists.  In order to help ensure INDOT’s subrecipients have the knowledge and tools to succeed in developing a Title VI Plan, FHWA, INDOT and metropolitan planning organizations (such as NIRPC) are conducting trainings/workshops around the State of Indiana.

On Tuesday, August 30, 2016 an FHWA-lead workshop will be held at Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC). While the workshop will use highway examples, it is important to note that recipients of any federal funds are required to have a Title VI Plan that addresses all programs, not just those funded with highway dollars.

The workshop will start at 9:30 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. (CST). NIRPC will provide lunch. Attendees should leave the workshop with a better understanding of the requirements and responsibilities their town/city/county has, including developing a Title VI Plan, strategies to make sure required components are in place to ensure no discrimination is taking place, notify INDOT of efforts, tools to evaluate programs, and making corrective actions as needed.

All Title VI coordinators, program managers or other appropriate staff are encouraged to attend.  Please RSVP no later than Tuesday, August 23 to Mary Thorne at NIRPC at (219) 763-6060 extension 131 or at mthorne@nirpc.org.  For additional information regarding Title VI and the Training Workshop, please do not hesitate to contact Gabrielle Biciunas at (219) 763-6060 extension 156 or at gbiciunas@nirpc.org.
